Commuting within London on the top decks of buses, Emma developed a loathing for grey net curtains and she soon set about developing a solution to rid London of the net curtain forever. By printing lace patterns onto frosted etched vinyl Emma created an elegant and functional product and in 2006, she launched a collection of contemporary decorative window films. Her Adhesive window films collection were shorlisted as Best Interior product by Grand Designs Magazine in 2008 and have been featured in magazines and blogs worldwide. You can find her collection of window films in the most stylish of windows all over the world, transforming the ordinary into something extraordinary.
Emma is a visiting lecturer on UK undergraduate and postgraduate design and craft courses. With ten years of creative business practice she is now in the position to pass on her experience in supporting those starting up. From 2008 to 2010 she was the co-ordinator and mentor for the Crafts Council of England on the Next Move scheme. Here she supported the start up of six UK craft and design early stage makers setting up in business.
Emma Jeffs Biography
Award wining designer Emma Jeffs has been creating custom surface designs for a wide array of materials and products since opening her London studio Surface Material Design in 2000. With a background in textiles, Jeffs’ designs with a variety of techniques—ranging from hand drawn to digitally generated images, creating unique solutions for her clients. She has a passion for print and materials and her portfolio spans custom projects for architects, manufacturers, interior designers and retail. Designs include patterns for wall coverings, textiles and lighting. She licenses her designs and products to companies in Europe and the US.
In 2004 Emma was awarded a UK government NESTA two-year research fellowship. The grant enabled her to undertake in-depth research into print technologies onto a range or materials within industry. Equipped with this new knowledge Emma began producing work, both within her studio, and in conjunction with some notable UK based companies.
